Overview

Cookies is a global cannabis brand that started with roots in San Francisco and has now become one of the leading cannabis brands in the industry. Co-founded by Berner, a Billboard-charting rap artist, and Jai, a master breeder, the brand is dedicated to ground-breaking genetics and a lifestyle brand that marries music, fashion, and cannabis. Cookies has more than 70 retail stores in six countries featuring a diverse product catalog that includes strain exclusives and CBD-infused products.

In 2021, it was deemed one of America’s Hottest Brands by AdAge, the first cannabis brand to receive this distinction, and Berner was the first cannabis executive to be on the cover of Forbes. With its headquarters in San Francisco, Cookies strives to deliver social impact through supporting communities of people impacted by the War on Drugs. Its valuation is based on fast growth, organic promotion due to Berner’s music, and alliances that have made it synonymous with a premium cannabis experience everywhere.

History

Cookies was founded in 2010 in San Francisco’s Sunset District. When Berner was working in dispensaries in the medical cannabis scene in San Francisco. Berner was born Gilbert Anthony Milam Jr on the 27th of October 1983 and grew up fascinated with cannabis culture along with hip-hop music. His interest in cannabis in the Bay Area started early, however, when he received one of the first medical cannabis cards in the Bay Area at age 18, on the outset of California’s Compassionate Use Act of 1996. While working at “The Hemp Center” dispensary, Berner met Jai Chang, a renowned cannabis breeder and cultivator with expertise in developing unique cannabis genetics. Their partnership was built on a shared commitment to creating exceptional cannabis products that set new industry standards.

Berner and Jai Chang

Finally in 2010, Berner teamed up with Jai (who has gone by the alias Jigga), a talented grower who started cultivating strains in SF garages when he was a teenager. Their turnaround was through Girl Scout Cookies (GSC), a combination of OG Kush and Durban Poison (possibly with the addition of Granddaddy Purple), a strain that has a sweet, earthy flavor. GSC became popular through the music videos of Berner and links to artists, such as Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg, which were distributed through High Times Cannabis Cup events. In an effort to get around federal laws banning the trademark of names on cannabis products, Berner formed Cookies SF in 2011 as an apparel company, using merchandise to create brand awareness as federal cannabis businesses were being tested.

By 2015, Cookies had created its debut flagship retail shop in San Francisco and branched out in the next 2 years into branded merchandising and street apparel. The opening of the store in Los Angeles in 2018 signaled a new stage of accelerated national and worldwide growth, as new stores opened in leading American recreational cannabis California, Oregon, Michigan, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Canada, as well as in Israel and Europe (specifically Spain, the Netherlands and Austria). The Cookies brand rapidly grew, having an impact on the celebrity status of Berner and the production of high-quality and consistent genetics. The cross-breeding with other breeders (e.g., Seed Junky Genetics) as well as fusion with avant-garde, coupled with music and activism, further extended the reach.

Cookies was honored in 2021 as one of America’s Hottest Brands by AdAge, the first cannabis company ever to be recognized as such. By 2022, Berner became the first cannabis executive to be on the cover of Forbes magazine with Cookies garnering over 70 retail dispensaries and trading in more than six countries globally by 2025. Cookies has also been at the frontline of cannabis legalization and social equity, advocating policies and initiatives to redress the harms of prohibition.
